This policy covers stuartderman.com and the forms, newsletters, events and communications connected to it (together, the "Site"). The Site is operated by Stuart Derman ("Stuart," "we," "us"). By using the Site or sending us information, you agree to this policy and to our Terms of Use.
Information we collect
You give us information when you fill out a form or contact us. Depending on the form, that can include:
Your name, email address, company, role, website and location
Details about your company that you choose to share, such as its stage, market, traction, fundraising plans and links to a deck or other materials
Event and speaking details, such as dates, location, audience size and budget
Your answers to the Compounding Demand Scorecard and the results it produces
Anything else you write in a message to us
We also collect some information automatically when you visit, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how long you stay, the page that referred you, and your approximate location based on your IP address. We collect this with cookies, pixels and similar tools, including tools provided by analytics and marketing platforms.
We may add to what we know about you with information from other sources, such as your public LinkedIn profile, your company's website, public business databases and people who refer you to us.
How we use it
We use the information we collect to:
Respond to your inquiry, pitch, booking request or application
Send you the newsletter, essays, event invitations and other communications about Stuart's work and the companies he's involved with
Evaluate companies and founders for investment, advisory or mentorship, and keep records of those evaluations
Plan and run events, including the founder roundtable
Understand who visits the Site, and improve the Site, the newsletter and our content
Build and maintain our contact records, including by combining the information you give us with information from other sources
Research markets, industries and trends
Protect the Site, prevent fraud and abuse, enforce our terms and meet legal obligations
Any other purpose we describe when you give us the information, or that you agree to
We may also turn information into aggregated or de-identified data that no longer identifies you. We may use and share that data for any purpose.
How we share it
We share information in these situations:
Companies Stuart is involved with. We may share your information with companies Stuart founded, leads or controls, including RELLO. They may use it in line with this policy, including to contact you about their services.
Service providers. We use outside providers for things like website hosting, email, contact management (such as HubSpot), analytics (such as Google Analytics) and form processing. They handle information on our behalf.
Partners on a specific activity. If you apply for an event, we may share your details with co-hosts. If you pitch a company, we may share your materials with co-investors, advisors and others who help us evaluate it.
Business changes. If the Site or a related business, or its assets, is sold, transferred or reorganized, your information may transfer as part of that.
Legal reasons. When we believe sharing is required by law, or needed to protect our rights, property or safety, or anyone else's.
With your consent, or at your direction.
We do not sell your personal information for money.
Pitches and submissions are not confidential
Anything you send through the Site, including pitch details, decks and ideas, is not treated as confidential or proprietary. Sending it does not create a confidential relationship, a non-disclosure agreement or any obligation to invest, advise, respond or return materials. Stuart reviews many companies and may invest in, advise or build companies that are similar to or compete with yours. Please don't send anything you need to keep confidential. Only a written agreement signed by Stuart creates confidentiality obligations.
Email and marketing
When you give us your email address, you agree that we may send you the newsletter and other updates about Stuart's work, events and the companies he's involved with. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. We may still send messages about a specific inquiry or request you made.
Cookies and analytics
The Site uses cookies and similar tools to remember your preferences, measure traffic, understand how people use the Site, and attribute visits to the campaigns and referrers that sent them. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but parts of the Site may not work as intended. The Site does not respond to Do Not Track signals.
How long we keep it
We keep information for as long as it's useful for the purposes in this policy, including ongoing relationships and records of past inquiries and investment evaluations, and for as long as the law requires or allows. Deleted information may remain in backups for a period of time.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards to protect information. No website, email or storage system is completely secure, and we can't guarantee the security of information you send us.
Your choices
You can unsubscribe from marketing email at any time. You can also ask to access, correct or delete the information we hold about you through our contact page. We'll respond as required by the law that applies to you. We may keep information where the law allows, for example to keep a record of your opt-out, resolve disputes or meet legal obligations.
Depending on where you live, local law may give you additional rights. Where those laws apply to us, we will honor them.
Children
The Site is meant for adults. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Where information is processed
We are based in the United States, and information is stored and processed in the United States. If you use the Site from outside the United States, you agree to your information being transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those where you live.
Links to other sites
The Site links to other websites, including RELLO and the Wasatch Mountain Film Festival. Their privacy practices are their own, and this policy doesn't cover them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy at any time. When we do, we'll change the effective date at the top. The updated policy applies from the date it's posted, and if you keep using the Site after that, you accept the changes.
